patient_ot Great ambient drone here. Dark, but not total blackness. Fairly soothing, excellent nighttime listening.

This debut recording is an interpretive response to nature's unfortunate conflict with man! The Earth certainly has a voice and BENEATH THE LAKE have found a way to channel it respectively! The music of Beneath the Lake is based upon compositions of soundscapes using samplers, guitars, bass, wind instruments, organs, effect processors, and field recordings to generate sound. The concept behind the music is to create a juxtaposition between the natural world and the industrial world. Beneath the Lake draw inspiration through an epic beauty of being on a vast, dark and cold body of water within Alaska's "Inside Passage."

BENEATH THE LAKE paint audible collages reflecting the splendor within the forces behind nature, which are grand, timeless and transcend human culture, logic and perception...From whales, to a wasp, to wind, environmental recordings are sampled and skillfully manipulated, then melded with melodic ambient guitar textures and dense synthesis to create an organic, warm and honest collection of movements...A spirited journey!!

The two members of Beneath the Lake, Nicolas Lampert and Dave Canterbury each have a long history in soundscape music. Nicolas Lampert (Milwaukee, WI) was a member of the Oakland, California based experimental-noise-punk band, NOISEGATE, from 1995-2000. During this time, NOISEGATE released two full-length recordings on the San Francisco label Tumult and toured the US and Canada extensively. Nicolas Lampert also set up numerous experimental-noise shows at the 40th St. Warehouse in Oakland, California for local and touring acts such as MERZBOW (Japan), MASONNA (Japan), ILLUSION OF SAFETY (Chicago), TRIBES OF NEUROT (Oakland), CAROLINA RAINBOW (San Francisco), UBZUB (Oakland), CRAWL UNIT (Sacramento), DEERHOOF (San Francisco), THE THROWNS (Salem)

Dave Canterbury (Black Earth, WI) has self-released numerous recordings with the experimental-noise band, WAGE CLASS SLAVE and solo ambient-drone project DUST since the early 90's. He records and engineers all of the material by Beneath the Lake and his other sound projects.

Once in a while, we here at Manifold tell you we've found a disc of Dark Ambient that perfectly reflects our isolationist sentiment, a disc that simply blows us away. We've had to recommend Aarktika, Sleep Research Facility or Ruhr Hunter in this spirit and here is Beneath The Lake. A succession of titanic, monstrous, perfectly chilling and powerful black soundscapes that evoke a Norwegian wilderness, a dark, icy Canadian tundra. Creeping, invisible things. Moods as large as the world. Thinking black clouds and yes, certainly enormous ancient monsters slumbering in the depths "BENEATH THE LAKE". Absolutely stunning! Don't miss this one folks.

Wow! Eight tracks of absolutely brilliant dark ambient music! The packaging is fucking awesome, as always from the Glass Throat camp. Everything is done in shades of blue with sparse use of small, clean text, all printed on this awesome metallic looking paper. It's almost like thick, incredibly fine sandpaper, because there's a gritty appearance, but the texture is completely smooth. Wonderful stuff. beautiful and perfectly appropriate for the music enclosed within. This is an utterly excellent CD, and one that should not be overlooked. It's not easy to be original in this genre, but I would certainly say that Beneath the is on the path towards innovation.

Haunting and chillingly beautiful. One of our new favorite ambient drone records.

A captivating collision of nature and technology. These free-thinking Wisconsinites mold shapeless, yet abstractly melodic, platforms from heavily processed guitar and environmental samples. Most striking is "Temporal Tributary" in which a placid canvas of sound is violently punctured by bolts of distorted noise...A kind of figurative "raping of the land."

Beneath The Lake is a project whose name and sound compliment each other very well. "Inside Passage" is a mature, deeply emotional listen that ultimately is pretty unique in the dark ambient sphere, from their use of sounds and the way they evolve them through the passion they convey.
