Regnārs Breikšs Meditative, droning and minimalistic folk experience, that in the vein of Wardruna and Forndom, and as my mate Yuriy sometimes says: "MUCHO RECOMMENDADO!" Favorite track: Denned Earth / Decay and Rebirth.

Waldhalla Chris I'm very happy that i've found this piece in bandcamp's endless thicket. Through this i had the chance to get in touch with Chet, whose intentions and thoughts are equal to mine. This definitely means a lot to me, because today it's very hard to meet people who really care about mother earth, as a part of it. Moss and Memory seems to be the right soundtrack, getting closer to the spirits surrounding us. Thank you for everything Chet, your Den Box is a very special and personal gift for me and also to everyone else, who loves the fresh scent of herbs and is fascinated by ritualistic heathen stuff. Favorite track: Antlers In The Fog, To Will The Spirit In Transit.

D. R. Beautiful, dark, and psychedelic music written as if channeled through Chet from the trees themselves...
The box set of this is one of my most prized items in my music collection. Favorite track: The Leaving Trees.

From visionary Chet W. Scott there are many branches: Glass Throat Recordings, Blood of the Black Owl, the Elemental Chrysalis and the subject of this brief narrative, Ruhr Hunter (now known as Cycle of the Raven Talons).

Chet is hands-down the most important-and most unsung-musician operating in the Pacific Northwest United States. Those fortunate enough to be familiar with his deeply personal works know that Chet embodies his music. Since 1996, Ruhr Hunter has operated with a vast array of instruments old and new, none of which would be considered traditionally "metal," yet with these tools he is able to create a sprawling, thunderous dirge that is unparalleled. Silence and nature are woven as instruments, and dynamics sway from a whisper to moments of Neurosis-like enormity. Considering the far reaching nature of his influence, and the refreshing sincerity that defines his many projects, I am constantly perplexed by how little the press has documented his work.
----DECIBEL MAGAZINE (October 2011, No. 084 / Top 5 influential "Neofolk" article)

Moss and Memory requires an attentive ear that can also fall back on the imagination to put fragmented pieces of images, emotions, and sound together into a cohesive and personal journey. This energy seems to be harnessed in cyclic themes (both in music and imagery) as something that is continual in nature and in spirit. Because of this, the power behind these sounds as they come and go throughout the album strike the listener with an immediate association to memory or what we have attributed to the soundscape as a whole.
    ----WORMGEAR

Chet W. Scott's music evokes a primordial root connection to the natural landscape, specifically the rain-drenched evergreen forests of the Pacific northwest, and there's many a black metal band out there who would sell their charred and worthless souls to be making music this shamanic, shadowy, heathen and atavistic
    ----JUDAS KISS

I got the limited edition set of this release, called "The Den". The CD is already very richly packaged in its original version, in a 6x6" gatefold sleeve with foil printing. In the limited edition, however, it is buried in an actual piece of forest. A large paper box, with the logo foiled on it, and bound with leather, holds a mass of cedar, moss, feathers, fungi, bones and other objects, carefully gathered by Chet W. Scott for this purpose. The smell of the whole thing is wonderful, and the whole is almost too frail to handle regularly, though that is definitely what you'd like to do, to get the full experience from this album.

Needless to say, this is a very special release, in terms of both music and design, proving that this husband and wife make a great artistic pair. This release is highly recommended to everyone who likes atmospheric ambient and acoustic music, or 'nature music'. If the description of the special edition piqued your interest, don't hesitate to get it, because it is ridiculously cheap, especially considering over half of the price is spent on shipping! I don't know how Chet and Rachel manage all this generosity, but I'd recommend everyone to support them, and get some great art in return....(9/10)
    ----EVENING OF LIGHT

I have often felt the music of Glass Throat to act as a series of folk rituals and invocations for these places whether imagined or real. On this collection of music prepared over a few years, Chet W. Scott as the main musician has produced a singularly powerful work. Glass Throat is almost unknown in the experimental folk field yet is one of the leading exponents of music the broad minded will find an intuitive connection within.

Maybe the testament of such music is to create a vivid impression of these wild places and their importance. To help us connect with the natural and accept it on its own terms. Maybe then we can learn to work with nature, to leave it alone and to help sustain it. The music works as devotional ritual, as musical prayer and an immersive sound world. In whatever way it is appreciated, we feel the listener returns with a sense of wonder. That the music evokes such spaces completely and seems to transport us in a waking dream state is the best recommendation we can give
    ----HARVEST HOME / UNBROKEN CIRCLE

Simply put, "Moss and Memory" surpasses all others, mostly because of its wonderful melodic arrangements that lift this gem well beyond its supposed peers. This album reaches a new plateau of deeply emotional and spiritual expression, being born out of a profound connection to the spirit world and the earth.
    ----HEATHEN HARVEST

"Moss & Memory" is Chet W. Scott's third full length work as Ruhr Hunter, one that has come a full decade since 1996 to this collection of telluric drones and cryptogamous soundscapes. In the face of modern humankind's paring of nature, "Moss & Memory" evokes an atavism and reawakens the animism, which despite being overlooked by a technologically advanced society still pervades all essential beings but truly finds home where nature is unfettered. Gneissic mysticism, as layered as time is immemorial, "Moss & Memory" serves as postern to the wonder of the microcosm as it relates to the macrocosm, an embrasure through an isthmus of modernism and materialism.
    ----AURAL PRESSURE

A true forest folk music, dark ritualistic soundscapes, primal, tribal, shamanic. Lovely and dreamlike. The sound of wind in leaves, the sound of rain falling through trees, rendered in swirls of acoustic guitar, distant shimmering drones, hushed whispered vocals, as well as actual sounds of the wild, animals, and nature, woven into Ruhr Hunter's dense sonic tapestry. A moody and melancholy missive from the heart of a dark forest, a mysterious figure cloaked in a constantly shifting swirl of low end rumble, sits before a black cauldron suspended above a crackling fire, shadows dance wildly on the canopy above, into the pot the figure places a Jeweled Antler, a Dead Raven, blades of grass, a handful of Lichens, a pine cone and a Wooden Wand, a glorious sound drifts from the murky brew, like tendrils of smoke, drifting heavenward, tangled up in the branches overhead, shifting amongst the shadows, filling our ears with a soft warm otherworldly fire.

"It is heartening to engage with a living, breathing work of art in this era of a digitized, sterilized and homogenized music industry."-Anthony Thibodeau

Only a few copies remain folks of the "Den." A hand numbered artifact containing Ruhr Hunter's 2006 full length CD offering "Moss and Memory."

Courtesy of Rachel Boaz-Scott, this hand crafted & woven with Bison / Elk hide paper box altar uses the very same paper stock & dark (matte) brown foil stamping process as the actual album. Its contents were gathered by Chet W. Scott, within many sacred retreats to the Olympic peninsula's Old Growth womb & later ritually charged within a whorl of white sage smoke, sweet grass, lavender & cedar.

The completely packaged CD release is buried under a thick bed of local fallen old growth cedar as well as gathered mosses, lichens, earth tongues, dried herbs, feathers, fauna & flora. Also included, a hand burned & carved hide sigil filled with ground Elk antler & sage.

No one box nor hide is ever the same! Contents will be random and may contain the following: A RUHR HUNTER hand burned Bison hide patch, Ocean stones, Crow feathers, bones and teeth, insects, branches and White Birch bark collected from the forests of Maine!

"The Den" 10th year anniversary box edition is strictly limited to #175 copies out of 1,000 discs initially pressed!

This production is Only available through GLASS THROAT RECORDINGS exclusively! Please Note: This is NOT a RUHR HUNTER discography box set!

NOTE: THIS IS A BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK ITEM INTERNATIONALLY DUE TO THE UNPREDICTABLE NATURE OF OVERSEAS CUSTOMS. REFUNDS WILL NOT BE ISSUED.

Track Name: Antlers In The Fog, To Will The Spirit In Transit
In earth through death I wait to begin my journey
White deer they come in herds to embrace me
Track Name: Woodlore Communion
Fields of light from fire flies turn low
The earth tongue speaks to me through holes in broken seas
The soil falling from the sky
Track Name: The Leaving Trees
Now this falling fades
So I ascend
To new heights
World under foot
I can hardly see the ground now
Drifting winds
They do howl through me
Turning shades
A strident force
Far a field of skyward glances
A trembling
Soaring inward
I know this earth
Where I grow is where I'm from
I set my grip
And turn to leave
